Marie Grandval
Andante and Intermezzo for Piano Trio
Marie Félicie Clémence de Grandval (1828-1907) also known as Vicomtesse de Grandval and Marie Grandval was born near the French village ofs at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts. As a young girl, she received composition lessons from composer and family friend Friedrich Flotow, and later studied privately with Frédéric Chopin and Camille Saint-Saëns. Because of her social position and the time in which she lived, she published many of her works under pseudonyms. She won the prestigious Prix Rossini in 1881 and her compositions were quite popular during the last decades of the 19th century.
The Andante and Intermezzo was completed in 1889 and dedicated to the prominent French violinist Edouard Nadaud, Professor of Violin at the Paris Conservatory. The lovely Andante begins in a calm, lyrical and a bit valedicatory fashion. Each of the strings take turns singing while the piano quietly remains in the background. Then a more lively, exciting middle section is interposed before calm is restored. The Intermezzo is a dance-like affair full of the perfume of the Parisian salons.
These make an excellent choice on a concert program where a shorter work is needed and either of these would make for an excellent encore.
